World in my eyes - Zoe Leonard

Zoe Leonard (f. 1961, Liberty, New York) är en New York-baserad konstnär vars strikt konceptuella praktik förenar fotografi, skulptur och platsspecifika installationer. Hennes verk undersöker fotografins roll i att forma seende, historia och maktstrukturer.

Återkommande teman är det urbana landskapet, sorg och sörjande i relation till AIDS-epidemin samt människans påverkan på naturen. Leonard är även känd för textverk som det queera manifestet I want a president och för långsiktiga projekt om fotografi, territorialitet och nationalism.

Hon var aktiv inom ACT UP och Women’s Action Coalition och är medgrundare av konstnärskollektivet fierce pussy. Leonard har ställt ut internationellt, bland annat på Documenta, Whitneybiennalerna och i större separatutställningar på MoMA, Whitney Museum of American Art och Museo Reina Sofía.

Recurring themes include the urban landscape, grief and mourning in the context of the AIDS epidemic, and the human-driven transformation of the natural world. Leonard is also known for text works such as the queer manifesto I want a president and for long-term projects addressing photography’s role in territorial expansion and nationalist narratives.

A former member of ACT UP and the Women’s Action Coalition, Leonard is a founding member of the artist collective fierce pussy. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at Documenta, the Whitney Biennials, and major solo exhibitions at MoMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and Museo Reina Sofía.
